SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Drew University men's volleyball team took on No. 20-ranked Hobart College in the first round of the Springfield College Morgan Classic and lost by a 3-0 count.
The Statesmen won by scores of 25-22, 25-18, and 25-21.
Sophomore
Michael Shipman posted eight kills for the Rangers (7-4), who saw their four-match winning streak come to an end. Senior
Jason Barbosa registered seven kills and just one error on 12 swings and hit .500, and sophomore
Gio Martin also contributed seven kills and four digs for Drew, which was playing its second nationally-ranked opponent of the season. Sophomore
Quinn Donahue recorded 20 assists and four digs while classmate
Gavin Cantada also notched four digs.
The Rangers led 11-6 in the opener before Hobart rallied over the remainder of the set. Drew still led at 20-18 before the Statesmen closed the period on a 7-2 run.
Hobart never trailed in the second set after scoring the first three points and opening on a 9-4 run. The Rangers pulled to within three points twice, the last coming at 18-15, before the Statesmen finished the set on a 7-3 spurt.
Drew used an early 6-2 surge in the final set that included aces from sophomores
Matthew Adegbite and Cantada to go up 12-11 before Hobart pulled away over the rest of the period.
The Rangers will now play No. 3-ranked Stevens in the consolation match on Saturday at 6 p.m. Stevens lost to No. 1-ranked Springfield 3-0 in the other first-round match.
