SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Drew University men's volleyball team won the opening set, but No. 3-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology earned a 3-1 victory over the Rangers in the consolation match of the Springfield College Morgan Classic on Saturday.
The Rangers (7-5) captured the opening set 25-16 before the Ducks (9-1) won 25-13 in the second set to even the score. Drew nearly went up 2-1 after serving for set point in the third set, but Stevens prevailed 26-24, then clinched the match with a 25-18 fourth-set victory.
Drew's set win was just its second in program history, along with last year's third-set victory in a 3-1 loss to then-No. 12 Messiah University.

Donahue hit .444 versus Stevens, as he committed just one error on nine swings. He also handed out 20 assists in Drew's 3-0 first-round loss to No. 20 Hobart on Friday.

The Rangers took control of the opening set with a 4-0 run that gave them a 9-6 lead, and they would not trail again the rest of the stanza. Stevens trailed just 18-14 before Drew pulled away down the stretch with a 7-2 run to clinch the set.
In the second set, the Ducks used a 6-1 surge to go up 8-4, and they would gradually pull away throughout the remainder of the period.
The Rangers had Stevens on the ropes in the third set, leading 18-13 following a block from Oostdam. But that's when the Ducks rallied with a 4-0 run to climb back into it. A kill from Oostdam made it 24-22, but Stevens ended the set on another 4-0 run.
The Ducks never trailed in the fourth set after opening on a 9-3 run. Drew answered with the next four points, capped by an ace from Martin that made it 9-7, but that's as close as it would get, as once again, Stevens gradually pulled away.
The Rangers are back in action on Thursday, when they host Neumann University in a non-conference affair starting at 7 p.m.
