MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's volleyball lost a 3-0 decision to Hunter College in a non-conference tilt Friday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.
The Hawks won by scores of 25-21, 25-20, and 25-16.
Sophomore
Gio Martin posted six kills, six digs, and a pair of aces for the Rangers (9-11) while classmate
Michael Shipman added six kills and two blocks. Sophomore
Quinn Donahue added five kills, 21 assists, and four blocks, and freshman
Isaiah Harris contributed three blocks. Sophomore
Eric Forget contributed eight digs.
Ahmed Mohamed paced Hunter (14-6) with 13 kills and 13 digs.
The opening set was close in the early going, and the score was tied 15-15 after a kill from Martin. But that's when Hunter pulled away with an 8-2 run.
The second set followed much of the same script, and the Rangers led 16-15 following back-to-back aces from Martin. The Hawks were unable to share Drew easily, however, and led just 21-20 after a kill from Shipman. But Hunter scored the last four points of the set.
The visitors had the upper hand early on in the final set, racing out to an 8-3 lead. But the Rangers found a spark and outscored Hunter 8-2 to assume an 11-10 lead. Drew scored the last five points of the stretch, which included kills from freshman
Lucas Mondin and Shipman and an ace from senior
Jason Barbosa.
The Hawks came right back with a run of their own, scoring six unanswered points to go up 16-11 before pulling away down the stretch.
The Rangers continue their season on Wednesday, when they visit Wilkes University in a Continental Volleyball Conference match starting at 7 p.m.
