Men’s Volleyball Rallies to Beat Wilkes in CVC Showdown

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Drew University men's volleyball team posted a reverse sweep, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 3-2 victory at Wilkes University in Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) action Wednesday evening.

The Colonels won the opening two sets, 25-23 and 25-23, before the Rangers came back to win the final three sets, 25-23, 25-17, and 15-10.

Senior Jason Barbosa posted a career-high 13 kills to go with 13 digs for the Rangers (10-11, 1-1 CVC) while sophomore Quinn Donahue recorded a big overall performance with 38 assists, eight kills, eight digs, and four blocks. Sophomore Michael Shipman added 10 kills, and freshman Isaiah Harris contributed nine kills and four blocks. Classmate Eric Forget contributed 12 digs.

Carter Otto led Wilkes (10-12, 0-4 CVC) with 19 kills and eight digs.

Drew rallied for a five-set victory over the Colonels for the second year in a row, winning 3-2 after trailing 2-1 a year ago.

The opening set was a back-and-forth affair, and the Rangers led 23-22 before Wilkes won the final three points, capped by a kill from Otto.

The Rangers appeared to be pulling away in the second set, using a 5-0 run to go up 19-15. However, Wilkes rallied with four unanswered points to pull even. After a kill from Harris made it 20-19, the Colonels scored the next three points to take the lead for good. Shipman threw down a kill to pull the Rangers within a 24-23, but a kill from Aidan Hunter put the hosts up 2-0.

A turning point for Drew came early in the third set, when it used a 6-0 run to go up 13-9. Freshman Lucas Mondin posted two kills during the stretch. The Rangers led by as much as 19-13, only to see Wilkes climb back into it, drawing to within 21-20. The Colonels made it a one-point match on three more occasions, the last coming at 24-23, before Harris clinched the set with a kill.

Drew took command of the fourth set in the early going, surging to a 16-9 lead following an 8-0 burst. Donahue and Shipman each spiked a pair of kills during the run, and Wilkes was unable to get closer than five the rest of the way.

The Rangers settled any doubt right from the start in the final set, outscoring the Colonels 8-2 to open the decisive stanza. Sophomore Nathaniel Fisbeck bookended the run with a pair of kills, and Barbosa made it 11-3 with back-to-back kills. Wilkes used a 5-0 run to make it 13-9, but Barbosa halted the rally with his final kill and a Wilkes service error handed the Rangers the victory.

Drew continues its season with a home tri-match on Saturday. The Rangers take on Marymount University in a CVC tilt at 3 p.m. before facing Ramapo College in a non-conference affair at 7 p.m.
