BIRMINGHAM, Ala. and MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Senior
Emily Camlet placed 17th in the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships while the remainder of the Rangers competed on the opening day of the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge in their outdoor opener on Friday.
Camlet was timed at 56.64 seconds for the two-lap event. Making her second straight appearance at the indoor national meet, she improved her placement by three spots from last year's championship despite being slowed by contact from a competitor late in the race.
Running in the fifth and final heat of the event, Camlet put herself into excellent position early in the race, running in second place behind race leader Nora Chen of Rochester. She ran her opening 200-meter split in 25.74 seconds, trailing Chen by just 0.11 seconds.
Camlet maintained her position in second place and was entering the final straight when contact was made from a runner coming up behind her, throwing Camlet off her stride. A protest was filed in the hopes of passing Camlet through to the final, but it was ultimately denied.
Camlet just missed becoming Drew's second track & field All-American, an honor given to the top-16 finishers in each event. The top-eight receive first-team honors while the ninth through 16th-place finishers are recognized with second-team status.
