Fast Start Sends Rangers Past Neumann

ASTON, Pa. – The Drew University men's lacrosse team started the game on an 8-0 run and the Rangers rode the hot start to a 13-4 non-conference victory at Neumann University on Saturday.
 
Sophomore Nick Carabetta handed out seven assists, tying for fourth in team history. It was the most assists by a Ranger since Eric Siegel C'04 notched eight helpers in a 20-1 victory over King's College on April 3, 2002.
 
Graduate student Joost van der Horst scored four goals while freshman Yaneik Gallego added three goals and three assists for the Rangers. Freshman Kullen Mcdermott also scored three goals, and senior Joey Larmore picked up four ground balls. Freshman Josef Zengerle contributed three caused turnovers.
 
In goal, senior Sawyer Kennedy started and made three saves while playing the first half. Junior Joe Barnish played the third quarter and recorded five saves without a allowing a goal before sophomore Aiden Kelly and freshman Luca LeClaire split the fourth quarter, with each turning aside one shot.
 
Sean Kelly won 17-of-20 faceoffs and picked up 13 ground balls for the Knights (0-6) while Owen Avelar registered 21 saves.
 
van der Horst poured in three of his goals in the first quarter, and his final tally of the period made it 6-0 with 50 seconds left. Sophomore Joseph Carabetta also converted twice in the stanza.
 
Gallego scored his second goal of the day a minute and a half into the second quarter, and sophomore Vincent Rubio capped the Rangers' game-opening run with 7:25 left in the opening half. Neumann broke up the shutout when it scored with 6:01 showing, but the Rangers responded with 4-0 run spanning the second and third quarters with four straight man-up goals, all of which were set up by Nick Carabetta. Mcdermott netted his first tally before van der Horst recorded his final marker of the day with 2:49 to go, handing Drew a 10-1 lead at the intermission.
 
In the second half, Mcdermott scored again before Gallego found paydirt with 7:10 left in the third quarter to make it a 12-1 game after three quarters of play.
 
Mcdermott tossed in Drew's final goal of the day with 4:43 left in the game.
 
The Rangers continue their season next Saturday, when they visit Lycoming College in their Landmark Conference opener starting at 1 p.m.
