Men’s Lacrosse Pulls Away Late to Beat Goucher

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's lacrosse team ended the game on a 6-1 run and the Rangers earned a 12-8 victory over Goucher College in Landmark Conference play at a sunny, blustery Ranger Stadium.

Drew (5-4, 2-1 LC) trailed 7-6 when Goucher scored with 2:35 left in the third quarter before it embarked on its decisive stretch. The Rangers reeled off four straight goals to go up 10-7, and after a Goucher goal, the Rangers netted a pair of tallies to clinch the victory.

Seven different Rangers scored a goal, including graduate student Joost van der Horst, who netted three goals and two assists, sophomore Nick Carabetta, who contributed three goals and one assist, and freshman Yaneik Gallego, who contributed two goals and one assist. Freshman Josef Zengerle added three ground balls and three caused turnovers while senior Theo Krueger contributed three GBs and two CTs.

In goal, senior Sawyer Kennedy made a season-high 10 saves while junior Gabriel Gutierrez won 13 of 23 faceoffs and scooped seven ground balls.

Jacob Morgan posted four goals and two assists to lead the Gophers (3-8, 0-3 LC).

The extremely tight game featured five ties and three lead changes. It was a 1-1 game after the first quarter, when freshman Kullen Mcdermott scored for Drew. The Rangers outscored Goucher 4-2 in the second quarter to go up 5-3 at the half. Gallego struck twice in the period.

Goucher opened the second half on a 4-1 run to go up 7-6. However, that's when the Rangers pulled away. Van der Horst kicked off the surge with consecutive tallies that gave Drew an 8-7 lead at the end of the third quarter, and sophomore Joseph Carabetta and senior Joey Larmore netted the first two goals of the final stanza to put the Rangers up 10-7. The Gophers scored with 5:20 left to make it 10-8, but Nick Carabetta and Zeer scored the final goals to set the final score.

The Rangers are back in action on Thursday, when they visit Catholic University in another Landmark Conference affair starting at 3 p.m.
