WASHINGTON – The Drew University men's lacrosse team came up on the short end of a 17-6 decision at Catholic University in a Landmark Conference tilt on Thursday afternoon.
The Cardinals (8-4, 4-0 LC) never trailed after outscoring the Rangers 4-1 to start the game.
Freshman
Yaneik Gallego led the Rangers (5-5, 2-2 LC) with three goals while senior
Sawyer Kennedy registered career-highs of 16 saves and five ground balls. Sophomore
Joseph Carabetta also posted five GBs.
Burke Healy totaled six goals and one assist for Catholic.
The Cardinals struck off the faceoff, scoring just 13 seconds in the game, before the Rangers tied it on a man-up goal from Gallego with 9:42 on the clock. But Catholic went in front to stay when it scored three times inside the final six minutes of the opening period and again in the opening minute of the second quarter.
Senior
Riley Zeer scored with 13:29 left in the opening half to make it a 5-2 game, but the Cardinals responded with a 3-0 run before sophomore
Vincent Rubio struck with 5:21 showing to make it an 8-3 game at the half.
Catholic tossed in the thre first three goals of the second half before Gallego scored his second goal to make it 11-4 with 5:24 left in the third quarter. Gallego added another tally with 10:23 remaining in the game to make it 14-5, and
Joseph Carabetta set the final score with a goal at the 1:23 mark.
The Rangers return to action on Wednesday, when they host Wilkes University at 7 p.m. in another Landmark Conference affair.
