Big Second Half Powers Men’s Lax Versus Wilkes

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's lacrosse team built a 5-1 halftime lead, the broke the game open with 12 goals in the second half in a 17-2 Landmark Conference victory over Wilkes University Wednesday evening in Ranger Stadium.
 
Sophomore Nick Carbetta scored five goals, graduate student Joost van der Horst netted four goals, and freshman Yaneik Gallego posted three goals and two assists for the Rangers (6-5, 3-2 LC). Junior Gabriel Gutierrez finished 9-for-17 on faceoffs and picked up six ground balls while freshman Gabriel Ferrari went 4-for-6 at the X.
 
Defensively, Drew forced Wilkes into 29 turnovers. Freshman Josef Zengerle recorded three caused turnovers while sophomore Joseph Carabetta pitched in with five ground balls and two caused turnovers to go with a goal and an assist. Senior Cole Kirker added a pair of CTs.
 
Between the pipes, senior Sawyer Kennedy started and made 10 saves while allowing just one goal over the first three quarters. Junior Joe Barnish played the final period and stopped six shots while yielding one goal.
 
Caleb Miller made 14 saves for Wilkes (4-9, 1-4 LC).
 
The Rangers scored the first three goals of the game, with the second two coming from Gallego. Joseph Carabetta struck with 11 ticks showing to give Drew a 4-1 lead at the end of the opening quarter. Van der Horst scored the only goal of the second period to give Drew its four-goal advantage at the half.
 
The Rangers erupted in the third quarter, when it outscored Wilkes 7-0. Nick Carabetta and van der Horst netted two goals each in the period.
 
Drew closed out a 12-0 run with the first three goals of the fourth quarter, which included two more from Nick Carabetta. Wilkes scored its first goal since the first quarter when it struck with 6:01 left before the Rangers scored the final two goals to set the final score.
 
The Rangers return to Landmark Conference action on Saturday, when they visit Susquehanna University at 1 p.m.
