Men’s Lacrosse Stopped by Montclair State in Leanos Cup Final

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's lacrosse team lost by a final of 14-6 to Montclair State University in the championship game of the Leanos Cup on Sunday at a sunny and pleasant Ranger Stadium.
 
The Rangers (2-3) trailed just 4-3 early in the second quarter before the Red Hawks (5-0) scored six unanswered goals spanning into the third period.
 
Six different players scored a goal for Drew, with sophomore Nick Carabetta posting one goal and one assist. Senior Sawyer Kennedy made nine saves over the opening 42 minutes before junior Joe Barnish stopped four shots the rest of the way.
 
Brian Kelly recorded four goals and one assist for Montclair State, which defended its Leanos Cup title, while Nicholi Halse made 12 saves.
 
The Red Hawks never trailed after opening the game on a 4-1 run. Sophomore Joseph Carabetta scored with 9:41 on the clock to make it a 1-1 game before MSU netted three straight. Graduate student Joost van der Horst cashed in with 36 seconds left to make it a 4-2 game at the end of the first quarter.
 
Drew pulled to within a goal when freshman Kullen Mcdermott tossed in a man-up goal with 11:18 left in the half. But the Red Hawks scored the only two goals over the remainder of the stanza and carried a 6-3 lead into the intermission.
 
Montclair opened the second half on a 4-0 run, opening up a 10-3 advantage with 3:08 on the clock. Senior Theo Krueger stemmed the rally when he went coast-to-coast for a goal with 30 ticks showing in the period.
 
Nick Carabetta scored with 10:53 left in the game to make it 10-4, but Montclair State answered with three unanswered goals. Senior long-stick midfielder Salvatore Desiderio set the final score when he struck for his second career goal with 2:45 remaining.
 
The Rangers are back in action on Saturday, when they visit Neumann University in a non-conference affair starting at 1 p.m.
