MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's volleyball team came away with a split in a home tri-match on Saturday in Baldwin Gym.
The Rangers opened the day with a sweep of Saint Elizabeth (25-14, 25-9, 25-16) before falling by a close 3-1 (25-17, 17-25, 29-27, 28-26) count to Sarah Lawrence, which improved to 10-1 on the season.
Against Saint Elizabeth, freshman
Jessica Donnelly turned in a big performance with eight service aces – just two shy of the school record. Senior
Victoria Latino added five kills while classmate
Alyssa Rachwal contributed 10 assists and three aces.
Latino led the way against Sarah Lawrence with 19 kills and four blocks while Donnelly posted a season-high 13 kills to go with four additional aces. Rachwal handed out 39 assists while senior
Meghan Pullen pitched in with five blocks.
The Rangers were on the verge of going up 2-1 against Sarah Lawrence, leading 24-19 before the Gryphons responded with a 6-0 run. Latino and junior
Melissa Zack combined for a block to tie the match at 25-25, and a kill from Donnelly put the Rangers up 27-26. However, Sarah Lawrence won the final three points to complete the comeback.
The fourth set was an epic back-and-forth affair the featured 14 ties and nine lead changes. The Rangers were serving for set point at 25-24 following a kill from Latino but the Gryphons answered with a kill of their own. Latino responded with a kill to make it 26-25 and Drew again served for set point, but Sarah Lawrence ended the match on a 3-0 run.
The Rangers return to action on Wednesday, when they visit Muhlenberg College at 7 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
