Hannah Stahl each scored a first-half goal and the Drew University women's soccer team captured the Battle of Madison Avenue with a 2-1 victory over FDU-Florham Wednesday evening in Ranger Stadium.
The Rangers (2-1-3), who earned their second consecutive victory, received eight saves from senior
Sarah Crowley.
Drew never trailed after Bent scored in the fifth minute for her first collegiate goal. She created the offense herself with a sequence of three straight shots on goal, the first of which resulted in a corner kick. She followed up with another shot that was knocked down by the keeper, but she sent the rebound into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
The Devils (5-2-2) tied it in the 19th minute, when Selena Rivera scored off a rebound of her own. But seven minutes later, Stahl picked an opportune time to score her first collegiate goal. Taking a pass from junior
Zoey Pipher, she drilled in a long-range shot from the right side of the field for what held up as the game-winner.
The reigning Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week, Crowley made an impressive fingertip save in the 73rd minute to help preserve the victory. She also made a leaping stop in the game's opening minutes, deflecting a shot off the crossbar.
The Rangers play their Landmark Conference opener on Saturday, when they visit Goucher College in a 4 p.m. start.
