Women's Soccer Shuts Out Gophers, 3-0

Drew 3, Goucher 0

Drew women's soccer picked up its first Landmark Conference win of the season with a 3-0 decision over the Goucher Gophers at Ranger Stadium. An early goal from Courtney Carnevale and a solid defensive effort sparked the victory which broke a four game losing streak and propelled the Rangers back into the thick of the Landmark Conference playoff race. Michelle Malone and Emily Weida netted the Rangers' other goals.

Drew opened the scoring in the third minute of play. Emily Weida got onto the end of a through ball before cracking a shot with her left. Goucher keeper Kellen Mathews made the initial save, but Carnevale was first to it for the easy tap in from eight yards out.

The Rangers scored a surprising second in the 33rd minute. After a number of headers failed to clear a long ball near the Gopher box, Michelle Malone gave it a first time chip that caught the Goucher keeper off her line. Mathews did well to get back, but could only palm it into the side netting for a 2-0 lead.

A great play by Goucher's Kitty McIlroy in the 38th minute saved a goal. Abby Dingle was about to get through on goal before McIlroy's sliding tackle cleared the ball out of the box to safety.

Weida got the third through hard work in the 57th minute. The Gophers had the ball in possession inside the box, but Weida's pressure forced a turnover. With the keeper charging out, Weida slipped her first touch inside the post for her fourth goal of the season.

Malone almost got another in the 68th minute; in a similar play to her goal in the first, the first-year's hard work got her in the right spot to latch onto a bouncing ball outside the 18. She beat the keeper, but not the crossbar as the game remained 3-0. Drew's Kim Jaikissoon was called upon to make just three saves in the game as the defense in midfield and back stop most Gopher attack before they started.

The win breaks a four game losing streak for the Rangers and evens their Landmark Conference record at 1-1 on the season. It also gets their four game homestand off on the right foot; Drew remains at Ranger Stadium for the next two weeks beginning with a Monday night game against DeSales and then a huge conference tussle with the Scranton Royals on Saturday.
