Women's Soccer Heads to Fall Fest Championship

Drew 2, Alvernia 1

Drew women's soccer earned a spot in the Fall Fest title match with a 2-1 win over the Alvernia Crusaders at Ranger Stadium. Kim Miranowic's early second half free kick and Emily Weida's 78th minute game winner pushed the Rangers into the final. Drew improves to 2-1-1 on the season with the win.  Drew will face Richard Stockton in the Fall Fest Championship match for the third consecutive season following the Ospreys' Penalty Kick Shootout win over Arcadia in the second game.

In the 9th minute, Alyssa Goodman nearly capitalized on a Crusader mistake. Emily Weida picked off a Crusader clearance before picking out Goodman in the middle; the senior's long range shot beat the keeper, but skipped wide of the target.

The Rangers sprung to life 21st minute as Weida jumped on a loose ball in the box, but could only smash it over the bar. Just four minutes later, it was Christine Meconi's turn to fire high from 12 yards out.

Most of the Crusader offense went through Felicia Sippel. The junior had all three of the visitors' shot in the half, the closest of which sailing wide of the target in the 40th minute.

A moment of brilliance gave Drew the lead. Kim Miranowic, who had been the Rangers' best player through the first half, stepped up to a free kick 25 yards away from goal just a few minutes after the restart. The senior drilled a rope into the top right hand corner, leaving the keeper helpless for a 1-0 advantage.

And then a moment of terrible luck gave that lead away. Kate McCaffery had no option but to lob the ball towards goal under pressure from a Ranger defender. The pop up seemed to fool Kim Jaikisson in goal as she hoped it would clear the bar for a goal kick. Instead, it fell just behind her then hit off the bottom of the bar for Alvernia's equalizer.

A flurry in the second nearly gave the Drew the go-ahead goal. Lindsey Neubauer, in goal for the Knights, twice denied Courtney Carnevale. Caitlin Dodge also tested the Crusader from distance just seconds later.

Weida1Weida did give the Rangers the lead in the 78th with a terrific finish. After latching onto Chelsea LeDuc's cross inside the 18, the sophomore chested the ball down and away from a defender before thumping home on the half volley just under the bar for the game winner.Chelsea 1

After some late nervous moments, the Rangers were able to run out the clock to move into the Fall Festival Championship game on Sunday at 2 pm.

In the second game of the day, the Richard Stockton Ospreys triumphed over the Arcadia Knights in the seldom seen PK Shootout. The Osprey's Lindsay Roake netted the final spotkick while Maria Dorris stopped a pair of Knight attempts in the shootout. Stockton will take on Drew in the Fall Fest title match for the third consecutive season.

Leah Pocoroba was dangerous for the Ospreys from the beginning. Early in the half, Jackie Law made a terrific diving save to thwart Pocoroba on a breakaway. Later, the Osprey forward whipped a shot just wide of the target.

In the 52nd minute, Stockton's Laura O'Shea flashed a header wide off Shelly Gibney's cross. Arcadia had a chance as Janelle Jablonski nearly scored a terrific opener for the Knights. After a nice turn in midfield, Jablonski ripped just high of the bar from 25 yards out.

After a pair of own goal scares nearly made an uncomfortable end to the game, but instead the match moved into the first and then second overtime period. After two minutes of the second overtime period, Rebeka Shafer crushed a free kick from 40 yards out that seemed to be a dramatic winner only to see Maria Doris made a diving punch to push it over the bar.

In penalty kicks, Maria Dorris made another big save to keep an Osprey advantage before Lindsay Roake finished it off for a 4-2 decision in the shootout.
