Opportunistic Ospreys Sting Rangers

Stockton 3, Drew 1

Drew allowed just six shots, but Richard Stockton's Leah Pocoroba made all three of her chances count as the Ospreys defeated the Rangers 3-1 in the women's soccer Fall Festival final. Pocoroba had the hat-trick for the guests before Emily Weida scored Drew's late consolation goal from the penalty spot. Stockton's Maria Dorris made just one save, but it was on Drew's first PK attempt late in the first half.

The Ospreys took the early lead after five minutes of play. Courtney Dougherty collected a Drew mistake before lobbing a hopeful ball forward for Leah Pocoroba. The Stockton junior took a touch to get away from her defender before sliding in a shot just inside the far post.

Pocoroba's terrific finish gave the visitors a 2-0 lead after 14 minutes. Amanda Altman popped up a cross from the right side towards Pocoroba in the box. Though moving away from goal towards the far left hand corner of the 18, the Osprey took it off the first bounce with the outside of her right foot to lob Drew's keeper for the second goal.

With five minutes left in the half, the Rangers had a chance to get back into the game after winning a penalty kick for a push on a corner. Caitlin Dodge had taken a PK well against CSI earlier in the year, but this time saw her shot easily saved by Maria Dorris. What could have been a big momentum changer for the Rangers instead proved a dramatic let off for the Ospreys.

Pocoroba grabbed her hat trick with 33 minutes left in the game as she was first to a loose ball in the box following a corner kick. Once again the Osprey finished well, crunching in a half volley for the 3-0 lead.
Drew did get on the board in the 87th minute as Emily Weida converted the Rangers' second penalty attempt. Alyssa Goodman won the spot kick with a good take down of a cross. The senior trapped it back where it came from and was chopped down by an Osprey defender. Weida stepped up to take it, coolly dispatching the shot inside the left post for the consolation goal.

The Rangers fall to 2-2-1 on the season while Stockton improves to 4-1. This is the third consecutive year that the Rangers have lost to the Ospreys in the finals of the Fall Festival. Drew has a short break before returning to action on Tuesday against Medgar Evers at 5 pm.
