The Manhattanville Valiants proved too much for women's soccer in a 3-0 loss for Drew. The Valiants scored twice early in the first half to take a commanding lead before an early second half goal secured the game for the hosts. Drew falls to 3-4-1 on the season, but with all losses coming to top teams.
Kathryn Moore, a senior defender, scored the eventual winner for the Valiants just nine minutes into the first half on a penalty kick. A handball in the box game Manhattanville the easy chance for the opener and Moore slotted into the lower left corner.
The Valiants took a 2-0 lead just five minutes later. In the 15th minute, Cybil Robinson got onto the end of a failed clearance for a close range finish. The Rangers ended the first half better than they started it; shots from Alyssa Goodman, Emily Weida, Megan Fogarty and Christine Meconi all caused some concern for the Valiants, but the half ended at 2-0.
Morgan Rebollal effectively ended the contest with a goal just six minutes into the second half. Robinson tapped a loose ball back to Rebollal who lobbed a shot from 30 yards out over Drew's defense for the 3-0 lead.
Drew had seven shots in the game, three drawing saves out of Ali Bromson in the Valiants' goal.
The Rangers fall to 3-4-1 on the season, but the record is misleading. Drew has played some of the top teams in the region in preparation for the Landmark Conference schedule, which begins on Saturday at Moravian. The Rangers' four losses have come against teams with a combined record of 26-3-3 this season. The Valiants, who are ranked eighth in the region, improved to 6-1-1 with tonight's win. The losses show that the young Rangers - of the 15 players to see time in the game, 10 were either sophomores or first-years - may not be ready to compete with the best teams in the Mid-Atlantic, yet, but they have no played four games against teams as good or better than those they will face in Landmark play.
Drew will travel to take on the defending Landmark champion Greyhounds on Saturday at 1 pm.
