Ranger Run Halted by Cardinals
WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 8, 2010) – The two-seeded Rangers fell to Catholic this afternoon, 13-3 in the Landmark Conference Championship Game this afternoon in the nation's capital. The loss ends Drew's five-game winning streak.
The rematch of last year's final would not prove to be as exciting as the Catholic took control from the start and never looked back. In nearly a five minute span in the middle of the first half, Catholic (12-6), scored the first five goals of the game. The Rangers stopped the bleeding at the 15:45 mark when
Lyndsay Fry (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Morristown Beard) netted an unassisted goal.
Drew (10-8), who trailed 7-1 at the half, struck first in the second frame when
Stacie Brown (Upper Marlboro, Md./Calverton) found
Cara Jeffries (Central Square, N.Y./Paul V Moore) to make the score 7-2 with a little over 26 minutes remaining. Catholic then rattled off the next six goals to put the game out of reach for the Rangers.
The Cardinals took advantage of their free position shots, converting 4-of-7 while the Rangers missed on both of their opportunities. Both teams were close in each of the major statistical categories. Catholic overcame some sloppy play and turned the ball over 23 time compared to Drew's 18. The Rangers out-shot the Cardinals 13-12 in the final period but Melissa Brashear went on to make a season-high 17 stops.
The Rangers only two losses in the months of April and May came at the hands of the Cardinals. Catholic improves to 4-1 against Drew since they both entered the Landmark in 2007.
