Box Score HUNTINGDON, Pa. (October 20, 2012) – After tallying the game-tying score with no time left in regulation, the Drew field hockey eventually fell in double overtime to Juniata (7-9, 2-3 Landmark) by the score of 5-4. The Rangers drop to 11-4 on the season and 4-1 in the Landmark Conference.
The Rangers staged a furious comeback in the final 10:05, tying up the game twice. Trailing 3-1,
Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.) scored her first goal of the game off a pass from
Danielle Waleko (Wainscott, N.Y./East Hampton) to make the score 3-2.
Senior
Sami Calabrese (Dover, N.H./Dover) scored her second goal of the game with 5:22 left in the game when she cleaned up a rebound and to tie the game up for the first time at three. The Eagles answered two minutes later after drawing a corner and getting a big shot from Emma Dahmus to recapture the lead, 4-3.
As time expired in regulation, the Eagles were called for a foul in the circle giving the Rangers one last untimed play for a chance to tie. Gagliano's number was called for a final time as she blasted the game-tying goal in the 70
th minute off the second assist of the game by Waleko.
The two teams played a scoreless first overtime with the Rangers winning the battle in shots, 5-1. For the game, Drew went on to outshoot the Eagles 26-17 and drew 14 penalty corners compared to 11 by Juniata.
In the 91st minute of the contest, Caroline Phillips had her shot saved by
CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) but the rebound fell to the stick of Sara Bilheimer who scored her third goal of the year for the game-winner.
Carlini made five saves while her counterpart, Janelle Howard made 13 saves to earn the victory.
With Catholic's loss to Scranton earlier today, the Rangers are now in a three-way tie with both Catholic and Scranton for first place in the Landmark Conference. A win over Catholic in next week's game in Washington, D.C. will give the Rangers the top seed in the upcoming tournament.
The rematch of the 2011 Landmark Conference Championship game between Drew and Catholic will be played this Friday at 4:30 in the nation's capital.
