MADISON, N.J. (February 11, 2012) – Despite 17 points by
Danielle Barber (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Twp.), the Rangers came up just short in the closing minutes, 60-56 against Scranton this afternoon in Baldwin Gym. The loss drops the Rangers to 8-16 on the year and 4-9 in the Landmark Conference.
The Rangers kept pace with the third place Royals all afternoon but were unable to close in the final minute of the game. At first it looked like Scranton had total control of contest, opening the game on a 12-4 run. Drew fought back, whittling the Royal lead down to four before halftime and went into the locker room trailing 29-24.
The Rangers scored six of the first eight points of the second half and captured its first lead on a
Jennifer Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City) layup with 17:13 left in the game. Drew held the lead for the next six minutes of play before Lindsay Fluehr hit back-to-back layups to give the Royals a 44-42 lead with 10:22 left in the game.
The Royals didn't relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest.
Victoria Ault (Middletown, N.J./Mater Dei) pulled the Rangers within six after a layup with 1:17 left on the clock. Barber and Ault scored the next three points from the free throw line making the game 58-56 with five seconds remaining. The Rangers, forced to foul, sent Fluehr to the free throw line where she sealed the game, hitting both with three seconds on the clock.
Ault scored six of her 13 points in the final three minutes of play and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in the loss. Mateo was the only other player in double figures for the Rangers as she added 10 points and five rebounds.
Scranton was carried by center Meredith Mesaris who had a game-high 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting.
The Rangers will end their 2011-12 season on Saturday when they welcome Merchant Marine to Baldwin Gym for a 2:00 p.m. bout. Prior to the game the Rangers will honor their four seniors,
