MADISON, N.J. (April 14, 2012) – For the second time in three seasons, the Drew womens' tennis team is playoff bound after an 8-1 victory over Catholic University (5-13, 2-3 Landmark) this afternoon. The Rangers now sit in first place with a 4-1 record in the conference and 7-3 mark overall.
The Rangers provided themselves with a three-game cushion going into singles play after winning all three doubles matches. Sophomore
Sofia Madrigal (San Jose, Costa Rica/Pan-American School) and
Sarit Ashkenazi (Haifa, Israel/Immaculate Conception) won their fourth-straight match as a pairing with an 8-6 win over Margie Selinger and Elaina Sceusa in first doubles.
Drew went on to win five of the six singles matches to clinch the victory. Freshman
Deanna Williams (Fairfield, Conn./Gorin Tennis Academy) and Isabel Tanco engaged in the most exciting match of the day at number five singles. Williams dropped the first set 6-1 but rallied back winning the second and prevailed in the third set 10-7 for the win.
The Rangers got straight-set wins in singles play from Ashkenazi,
Zoe Childs (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn), Madrigal and
Cristine Conde (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen).
The Rangers will be back at home on Wednesday for a non-conference match with Hunter College at 4:30 p.m.
