MADISON, N.J. (April 24, 2012) – The third seeded Scranton Royals (8-5) upset the number two seed, Drew (8-5) today with a 5-4 victory in the Landmark Conference Women's Tennis Semifinals. The Royals will advance to the Landmark Conference Championship on Saturday.
Unlike the matchup earlier this season the Rangers captured only one victory in doubles play at the number one position by
Zoe Childs (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) and
Sofia Madrigal (San Jose, Costa Rica/Pan-American School). In the regular season match it was the Rangers who won two doubles matches and went on to win the match 5-4.
In singles play,
Sarit Ashkenazi (Haifa, Israel/Immaculate Conception) and Childs recorded wins at the number two and three positions respectively for the Rangers. Nicole Mahaffey tied the match up with three with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over
Cristine Conde (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen).
The final three matches of the day went into third sets where both Stephanie Boccuzzi and Megan Azzalina of Scranton prevailed, to send the Royals to the conference championship. Azzalina clinched the match at the number five slot with a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 comeback victory over
Deanna Williams (Fairfield, Calif./Gorin Tennis Academy).
