Box Score MADISON, N.J. (January 26, 2013) – The Drew women's basketball team won their third-straight conference game with a 67-48 win over Susquehanna (6-13, 1-7 Landmark) this afternoon in Baldwin Gym. The Rangers improve to 8-11 overall and even their Landmark Conference record to 4-4.
Freshman
Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) led the Rangers in scoring for the third-straight game with a game-high 17 points. Sophomore
Breana Wilson (Irvington, N.J./Berkshire School) had her best game as a Ranger, totaling 16 points with 13 of them coming in the first half. Freshman
Erin Howard (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) rounded out the Drew double-digit scorers, adding 11 points.
The Crusaders were led by Eleni Dimou who came off the bench to score 13 points. Gina Palazzi was an insided force for Susquehanna, chipping in nine points and pulling down a team-high seven rebounds.
With the exception of two ties in the opening minutes of the contest, the Rangers were ahead for the entire contest. Midway through the first half, the Rangers created separation with a 10-0 run over a three minute span. Five different players contributed on the run, giving the Rangers a 24-10 lead with 6:39 remaining in the first half. The Crusaders netted only three more baskets from the floor the rest of the frame, and trailed 40-22 going into halftime.
With Wilson providing the offensive firepower in the first half, Stephens would step up in the final 20 minutes scoring 10 of her 17 points. Stephens, the team's leading rebounder going into the game, pulled down six boards and also dished off two assists. The Rangers went on to outscore the Crusaders by only one-point in the second half and did not allow Susquehanna to stage any sort of comeback.
For the game, the Rangers held a 43-31 edge on the glass and forced 22 Susquehanna turnovers. For the first time this season, Drew shot over the 50 percent as a team. The Rangers were 23-44 from the floor, good for 52 percent.
Senior
Becky Smith (Haverhill, Mass./Presentation of Mary Academy) continued to make her Presence felt on the defensive end of the floor, tallying four blocks. She now has 10 blocks in her last two games after a six-swat effort against Merchant Marine on Wednesday.
The Rangers remain a game out of the final playoff spot and will take on first place Moravian College at home on Wednesday night. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Baldwin Gym.
