Box Score MADISON, N.J. (November 2, 2013) – The 19
th ranked Drew University field hockey team clinched the #1 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs after a 4-2 victory over Juniata (9-10, 4-2 Landmark) this afternoon. The Rangers celebrated senior day with their 16
th victory and finish the regular season with a perfect, 6-0 conference record.
Senior
Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.) scored two first half goals and sophomore
Sam Barcia (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) scored two-second half goals, powering the Drew offense. Barcia tied the school record for goals in a season with her 27
th score of the year late in the second half. Senior
Danielle Waleko (Wainscott, N.Y./East Hampton) tied the school-record for assists in a game for the second time in her career with three.
The Rangers capture the #1 seed for the first time since entering the Landmark in 2007 and set a new school mark with six conference wins. Drew will take on Scranton on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in Ranger Stadium. The Rangers won the regular season match, 5-4 last weekend in Scranton.
The Eagles scored the game's first goal just 10 minutes in and held the lead all the way up to the 24
th minute. The Rangers, who came into the game ranked seventh in the nation in penalty corners per game, finally cashed in when Gagliano blasted home her 15
th goal of the season. Just before the half, the Rangers executed on another corner attempt with Gagliano firing her second goal into the back of the cage with 2:06 remaining.
Drew went into the half with a 15-7 advantage in shots and a 10-4 edge in penalty corners.
Barcia added to the Rangers lead on two quick goals beginning in the 52
nd minute. Sophomore
Amanda Hearney (Shoreham Wading-River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) sent a ball to the center of the circle that Barcia slammed home for the third Ranger goal of the afternoon. Just 3:19 later, Waleko dished off her third assist of the day on a pass from the top of the circle that was one-timed into the back of the net by Barcia, giving the Rangers a commanding, 4-1 lead.
Juniata responded with a goal off a rebound that was put in by Kortney Showers 1:38 later but that would be the only offense the Eagles could muster up for the remainder of the contest. The Drew defense held Juniata to just one shot over the final 13 minutes of play.
Senior
CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) got the start in cage of the Rangers and made four saves in a little over 60 minutes of play. Julianne Jones of Juniata made a game-high nine saves playing nearly 57 minutes. For the game, the Rangers outshot the Eagles, 24-11 and took 19 corners compared to six by Juniata.
For the third-straight season, the Rangers will take on Scranton in the Landmark Semifinals. Drew has vaulted themselves into the last two conference championship games with two, overtime victories in consecutive years over the Royals.
