Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa. (December 11, 2013) – The Drew University women's basketball team erased a six-point deficit with 2:52 remaining in the game to defeat Arcadia (6-3), 55-51 on the road. The Rangers bounce back and improve to 6-2 on the season.
It looked like Arcadia was about to close out the game, taking their largest lead of the half with 2:52 remaining in the game. Knight junior Victoria Roukas converted a 3-point play, drawing the hoop and the harm to give Arcadia a 47-41 lead. After a Drew basket on the ensuing possession, sophomore
Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) slashed the lead to just two points with a pair of free throws with 2:15 on the clock.
The Knights Maureen Fiocca put Arcadia up three on a free throw with just under two minutes remaining. Freshman
Hannah Miller (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) nailed the biggest shot of the night, tying the game on a 3-pointer with 1:28 remaining. She converted a layup with a little over a minute left to put the Rangers up 50-48, their first lead since the five minute mark of the second half.
The back-to-back baskets by Miller seemed to deflate the Knights offense and the Rangers capitalized from the free throw line. A combination of
Breana Wilson (Irvington, N.J./Berkshire),
Logan Cavanaugh (Rutland, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) and
Lexie Forsell (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute of the game to help the Rangers pull out the come-from-behind victory.
Miller continued her stellar play, netting a game-high 18 points. Stephens had a monster game on the glass for the Rangers, pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds. She added 13 points for her first double-double of the season. Cavanaugh was also big on the boards for the Rangers notching a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with seven points.
The entire contest didn't see a lead greater than seven which was in favor of the Knights early in the first half. The game saw 13 lead changes and was tied up a total of seven times. The two teams struggled from the field. The Rangers shot just 33 percent from the floor while the Knights shot an opponent-low 29 percent.
The Rangers were clutch from the free throw line when they needed to be but only converted 14-of-25 for the game. Drew held a 49-44 advantage in the rebounding department but committed a game-high 24 turnovers.
The Rangers next contest will not be until December 31
