Royals Sweep Rangers Despite Career Day from Mateo

Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. (February 6, 2013) – Scranton (16-6, 8-3 Landmark) handed the Rangers their third-straight loss this evening with a 72-64 victory in the Long Center. The Rangers fall to 8-14 on the season and are 4-7 in Landmark Conference play.

Senior Jennifer Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City) was brilliant, setting a new career-high in points (28), field goals (10) and three-pointers made (7). In the process she moved into the top-10 all-time in three-pointers made and now sits in 10th place with 72 career treys. Breana Wilson (Irvington, N.J./Berkshire School) was the only other Ranger in double figures with 11 points.

 For the Royals, four players got into double digits, led by Meredith Mesaris who netted 20 points including an 11-12 effort from the free throw line. Starters Erin Boggan and Alison Sweeney chipped in 19 points and 15 points respectively. Boggan turned away a total of five shots and pulled down seven rebounds in the win.

Scranton built a 10-point lead late in the first half, but the Rangers closed with a 7-2 run to cut the Lady Royals' advantage to 33-28 at the break. Boggan and Sweeney had 10 points each as Scranton shot 12-for-25 (48 percent) and made all seven free throw attempts.

Drew used an early 10-2 run in the second half to take a 38-37 lead at the 17:28 mark of the second half. Sweeney hit a three on Scranton's next possession and the teams traded buckets until the Lady Royals went on an 11-1 run to lead 53-43 with 10:38 to play. The Rangers got no closer than seven the rest of the way as Scranton made 18 second-half free throws.

Scranton shot 40 percent (22-for-55) from the field in the game, including 3-for-13 from 3-point range. The Lady Royals finished 25-for-29 (86.2 percent) from the free throw line and won the rebounding battle, 38-36. They committed 16 turnovers, just six of which came in the second half.

Freshman Erin Howard (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) also moved up in the record books by registering two blocks. She now has 48 blocks for her career which is 10th all-time at Drew.

The Rangers will close out their home schedule on Saturday when they welcome Goucher to Baldwin Gym. Prior to the 2:00 p.m. tip, the Rangers will honor their four seniors, Jennifer Mateo, Becky Smith, Jeramie Barletta and Whitney Mackay.
