Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. (March 8, 2013) – Women's lacrosse was on the losing end of a back-and-forth battle with Swarthmore (2-0) this evening at Clothier Field. Corinne Sommi scored the eventual game-winner with 4:59 remaining in regulation in a 9-8 Garnet victory.
Drew (2-2) suffered its second one-goal loss in as many games despite another valiant all-around effort. Sophomore
Nikki Kleiman (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) netted four goals and assisted on another to pace the Ranger attack. Senior
Devon Affleck (Abington, Pa./Abington) recorded two assists and was one of five Rangers to score a goal.
The real story of the night started in front of the cage for the Rangers. Swarthmore unleashed 38 shots with 29 of them going on net. Ranger goalkeeper,
CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) put forth a career-performance, making 20 saves, including 12 in the second half of play.
After the Garnet registered the game-opening score, the Rangers rattled off three-straight goals to take a 3-1 lead, their largest of the game. Swarthmore put a first half run of their own together, scoring the next three and taking a 4-3 lead with 4:12 remaining in the first frame. Kleiman sent the two teams in halftime tied 4-4 after her second goal of the night with just one second remaining in first half.
The two teams exchanged goals for most of the second half and the Rangers emerged with an 8-7 lead with 9:11 remaining in the game after Affleck's first goal of the game. However the Garnet scored the final two goals, the equalizer by Sara Lentricchia with 6:57 on the clock and the game-winner by Sommi with a tick under five minutes left.
Swarthmore was tremendous off the draw, collecting 13 draw controls compared to just five by the Rangers. The Garnet also held a 16-6 advantage in ground balls and were a perfect 7-for-7 clearing the ball.
Annalise Penkis led Swarthmore with four goals and an assist. Sommi and Elyse Tierney each had two scores to help the Garnet to their second win of the season.
The Rangers will continue south for a pair of games in Virginia over spring break. The Rangers will take on Ferrum College on Wednesday followed by a matchup with Roanoke College on Friday.
