Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 18, 2014) – The Drew University women's soccer team placed itself in the thick of the Landmark Conference playoff race with a 2-1 victory at Goucher College in league action on Saturday afternoon.
Junior forward
Emma Campbell and junior midfielder
Mel Santos netted the Rangers' goals and junior goalkeeper
Sara Nash (three saves) was 24 seconds away from the shutout before Goucher (3-10-1, 0-4 Landmark) scored its lone goal in the 90
th minute.
Drew (5-8, 2-2) made its statement early as Campbell notched her seventh goal of the season in just the fifth minute to give her side the 1-0 lead. The junior striker snuck a shot from the top of the 18-yard box off the right goalpost and in for her 38
th career goal, which is now tied for third in Drew history.
Both defenses shored up their efforts after the opening tally by Campbell, and just one more shot on goal was registered in the first half when junior midfielder
Victoria Condon's attempt was saved in the 40
th minute.
The second half began just as the first did: with a quick Rangers goal. This time it was Santos scoring her second goal of the season just 1:38 into the second half. Campbell picked up the assist on the play after threading a pass from the right side to Santos, who rocketed a shot into top left corner of the net for the always-dangerous 2-0 advantage.
Nash was then tested to keep her sheet clean over the next 20 minutes as a header in the 53
rd minute and shots in the 67
th and 68
th required saves from the junior keeper.
Santos' tally proved vital as Goucher salvaged a goal in the final minute of play. With just 24 seconds left on the clock, some quick passing in front of Drew's net led to a tap in goal, but there was not enough time for the Gophers to even muster a shot at an equalizer.
Drew plays its final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 22 against Rutgers-Newark at 4:30 p.m. at Ranger Stadium before continuing Landmark Conference play at Elizabethtown College on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 4:30 p.m.
