Rangers' Rally Falls Short Against William Paterson

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 7, 2014) – A late comeback attempt by the Drew University women's soccer team fell just short as William Paterson University won a non-conference match, 2-1, on Tuesday evening at Ranger Stadium.

After the Pioneers (4-5-3) took a 2-0 lead in the second half, sophomore Sabrina Rodrigues scored her first career goal in the 75th minute to start Drew's charge back into the game. William Paterson tightened up defensively, however, to hold on for the road victory and dropping the Rangers' record to 4-7.

The contest began with stingy defending by both sides, but William Paterson controlled the pace early during a scoreless first half hour. The Pioneers broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute after a Ranger defensive giveaway in the box led to an open shot 12 yards away from sophomore goalkeeper Andee Higgins. Gina Cowdrick scored her third goal of the season to give her side the lead.

Higgins helped keep the game scoreless up to that point by making two saves in the first half. Junior forward Danielle Cowan took the Rangers' first shot in the 25th minute when her attempt at goal outside the 18-yard box was blocked.

After halftime, William Paterson extended its lead in the 52nd minute by converting a long free kick opportunity. The Pioneers' Elena Grady played a long ball ahead to Adrianna Oliveira, who flicked a header from 16 yards out over the head of Higgins for the 2-0 advantage.

Drew would respond with some offensive pressure, but junior midfielder Shannon Slowey's shot was blocked and a run into space by freshman Samantha Garzon was flagged offside.

Drew's answer came in the 75th minute on a fast break by the Rangers. Junior forward Emma Campbell picked up her first assist of 2014 by creating space with blinding speed through the midfield, and connecting on a diagonal pass to Rodrigues, who took two quick touches before planting a shot to the left of the William Paterson keeper to cut the lead in half.

After the Rangers' tally, there was not a single shot taken by either side over the final 15 minutes as both backlines picked up the intensity with time running out. The Pioneers outshot the Rangers 12-5 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Higgins made four saves in the setback.

Drew returns to Landmark Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 11 when The Catholic University of America visits Ranger Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. kick.
