Women's Hoops Drops Rose City Opener to Clarkson

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (November 15, 2014) – The Drew University women's basketball team dropped the opening game of the Rose City Tip-Off Classic to Clarkson University by a score of 78-74 on Saturday evening, but not before a turning point.

The turning point came as senior guard Breana Wilson drove into the scoring area with Drew trailing by three. The Rangers desperately needed a 3-pointer to tie the game, but would settle for two. The turning point occurred as Wilson's two-point heave with seven seconds remaining went up. That turning point came literally, and as the ball turned and twisted and squirmed and seemingly hoisted itself up and out of the basket after three full revolutions around the rim. No good.

The missed shot buried the Rangers, as it would have brought them within one, with the obligatory intentional foul to follow. But it was not to be, and Clarkson came out on top. The tournament continues tomorrow and Clarkson will face College of Staten Island in the championship at 4 p.m. and Drew against College of St. Elizabeth at noon in the consolation game.

The Rangers were led by sophomore guard Hannah Miller, who scored 13 first-half points and ended with a team-high 23. Miller drained three 3-pointers on six tries. Junior Courtney Stephens and senior Breana Wilson combined for 14 first-half points and three steals.

The Rangers went into halftime with a 33-30 lead.

The second half featured more of the same from Miller as she nailed two quick 3-pointers as she diversified her stat sheet. Miller grabbed two rebounds and dished an assist before being subbed out.

Wilson and Stephens, meanwhile continued to distribute crisp passing but Clarkson was hanging strong, they took a 57-55 lead with 10 minutes to play.

It was towards the seven-minute mark that the Rangers began to lose control of the basketball. At this point they had already eclipsed twenty turnovers as a team. Breana Wilson was at 11, more than both of Clarkson's turnover producers combined.

With five minutes to go, Drew led by two, the turnovers keeping Clarkson alive.

Sophomore guard Courtney Trzasko, until now had been kept relatively silent, with zero points in the first half. With 4 minutes to go, she drained a deep 3-pointer, her first field goal of the contest. That basket gave Drew a 5 point lead.

Drew began tossing the ball around in the paint, unable to get it to junior center Erin Howard. Clarkson capitalized and slipped out of the defense and onto multiple fast breaks.

Trzasko, made up for her offensive inability with a huge forced turnover with 1:30 to go. A Clarkson forward yanked down a defensive board but not cleanly, as Trzasko bothered her. The Clarkson forward lunged forward to escape but was called for a travel.

The ball was swung around at the minute mark by Clarkson, and it looked like no one wanted to take the shot. The score stood at 74-72 Drew as Clarkson looked for an open player. They found one who pump faked and hopped back behind the 3-point line. She hoisted up a high arching shot and it sank. 75-74 Clarkson with 54.2 to play. They would then extend that lead to 77-74 before Drew called timeout.

Wilson missed her shot and Clarkson tacked on a free throw to seal the deal.
