Redhawks Soar Over Rangers in Season Opener

Box Score Montclair, N.J. (February 27, 2014) – The Drew University women's lacrosse team (0-1), opened the season on the road with the Montclair State Redhawks (1-0). Montclair used a big second half to defeat the Rangers, 16-6.

The Ranger offensive attack was paced by junior midfielder Nikki Kleiman (Cranford, N.J./Cranford). Kleiman scored three goals on eight shots for Drew in the loss. Junior Krysta Cento (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scored a goal on five shots and scooped up two groundballs for the Rangers.

Montclair State started the scoring early. Just :53 seconds into the game Redhawk junior midfielder Jenna Bussiere scored her first of the season giving Montclair State a 1-0 lead. The Redhawks scored the game's next two goals taking an early 3-0 lead with 24:15 left in the first half. Kleiman scored her first of the game on a free position shot, cutting the Montclair State lead 3-1. Freshman Charlotte Brown (Rumford, R.I./St. Mary Academy Bay View) scored her first career-goal for Drew in the first half cutting the Redhawk lead to 4-2 with 12 minutes left to play in the first half. Cento and Kleiman added a goal each for Drew to close out the first half. Montclair State took a, 7-4 lead into halftime.

The Redhawks continued their hot shooting scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half, taking an 10-4 lead with 20:46 left to play in the game. The Redhawks scored the next three goals to take a 13-4 lead. Freshman Morgan Mason (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) scored her first career goal for the Rangers cutting the Redhawk lead to 13-5 with 8:45 left to play. Kleiman added her third goal of the game for Drew less than a minute later. Montclair State scored the final three goals of the game bringing the final score to 16-6.

Ranger freshman Gianna Minogue (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) made her first career start in net for Drew. The freshman goalkeeper allowed 13 goals, while making 7 saves.

Drew returns to action on Wednesday March 5, at 4:00 p.m. in Ranger Stadium. The Rangers play host to Rowan University. Last season Rowan defeated Drew 19-11 in Glassboro N.J.
