Box ScoreMADISON, N.J. (April 10, 2014) – As the old saying goes, the hardest win in sports to obtain is the first.
The Drew University women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 7-2 victory over crosstown rival FDU-Florham to claim the Battle of Madison Ave. on Thursday afternoon.
The Rangers (1-5) swept doubles play before taking four of the six singles matches against their rivals.
"The hardest thing to do in sports is get the zero off the board," said first-year head coach
Matthew Brisotti. "It's draining wondering when you're going to get your first win, but our girls never lost faith. We started strong in doubles, and it set the tone that we believed we could get it done."
Drew got it done quickly in doubles play to get out to a 3-0 lead in the non-conference dual match. Senior
Sofia Madrigal and freshman
Jessica Cheng won at first doubles by an 8-4 decision, while the second doubles duo of junior
Deanna Williams and
Alexandra Scarborough were victorious 8-5. Senior
Leslie Monroy and sophomore
Kirby Clark completed the doubles sweep from the third position with a convincing 8-2 win.
The Rangers kept the foot on the gas in singles play as Cheng recorded the first win at third singles in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Scarborough made the victory official with Drew's fifth point, a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 win at fourth singles.
Williams picked up a win at second singles, 6-4, 6-1, while Clark (6-2, 6-1) and Monroy (6-1, 6-1) closed out the match with wins at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
"Deanna played a great match at second singles," Brisotti said. "Alex dug down deep for her win, and Kirby and Leslie really impressed on the court. Everyone looked comfortable and confident. It's big for them and now we're ready to move on and get a couple more before the season is up."
The Rangers look to keep up the winning attitude when Landmark Conference play resumes on Saturday, April 12 at Juniata College at 1 p.m.
