Cardinals Clip Rangers in Regular Season Finale

Box Score Washington, D.C. (April 26, 2014) – The Drew University women's lacrosse team (10-5, 4-2) suffered just their second in-conference loss of the season this afternoon to Catholic (10-5, 6-0), 21-11 in Washington D.C. The loss drops the Rangers to the third seed in the Landmark Conference.

Freshman Morgan Mason led the Ranger offense scoring a career-high five goals on the afternoon. Mason shot 80 percent this afternoon scoring five goals on six shots. Junior Krysta Cento added three goals in the game for Drew in loss. Cento recorded her 11th hat-trick of the season.

Catholic started the scoring just 24 seconds into the game when Laura Dun found Clair Schmitzer for her first goal of the game putting the Cardinals out in front 1-0. Mason responded for the Rangers one minute later for her first of the game tying the game 1-1. With the score tied 2-2 and just over 16 minutes left in the first half the Cardinals scored three goals in three minutes, including a man-down goal by Lindsay Brophy, to take a 5-2 lead. Drew answered scoring the next two goals behind Mason's second and senior Jess Johnson's first goals of the game, pulling within one, 5-4. The Cardinals outscored the Rangers 3-1 in the final four minutes of the half to take an 8-5 lead into the half.

The Cardinals picked up where they left off in the first half scoring the half's first goal just over a minute in. The Rangers answered three minutes late when Nikki Kleiman found Johnson for her second goal of the game. Senior Brooke Gagliano scored her 20th goal of the season pulling Drew within two, 9-7 with 24:52 left in the game. Catholic responded scoring the next two goals of the game, quickly answered by Mason's third goal of the game making the score 11-8 with 20 minutes left to play.

Following the Mason hat-trick the Cardinals opened up a six goal lead, scoring the next three goals of the game, including the third of the day for Nicole Laitner. Mason scored her fourth of the game to end the Catholic run at the 15:20 mark of the second half. Catholic closed the game on a 7-2 run for the 21-11 victory. Schmitzer and Laitner combined for six of the final seven of the game for the Cardinals. Mason and Cento scored the final goals of the afternoon for the Rangers.

Freshman Jadin James made her eighth start of the season this afternoon for Drew in the net. James played 50 minutes in between the pipes and made 13 saves in the loss.

The Rangers finished the regular season as the third seed in the conference, clinching their seventh consecutive postseason birth. Drew returns to action on Wednesday April 30, as they head to Selinsgrove, Pa. for their Landmark Conference Semifinal contest with second seeded Susquehanna.
