(April 30, 2014) – The No. 3 Drew University women's lacrosse team hit the road this afternoon for their Landmark Conference semifinal contest at second-seeded Susquehanna University. The Crusaders used a five-goal run in the first half to jump out to a lead they would not relinquish en route to a 20-12 victory.
Susquehanna advances to the Landmark championship game to take on No. 1 The University of Catholic on Saturday.
Junior midfielder
Krysta Cento paced the Rangers offense on the afternoon scoring six points on two goals and four assists. The conference-leading point scorer also grabbed eight draw controls and scooped up two ground balls while pushing her season total to 97 points on 49 goals and 48 assists. Classmate
Nikki Kleiman led the Rangers in scoring with six goals on the afternoon.
The Crusaders wasted no time starting the scoring just 43 seconds into the game when Emma Ehler found an open Michelle McGinniss in front of the goal putting Susquehanna up 1-0. Drew countered just 15 seconds later when Cento found Kleiman, for her first goal of the afternoon, tying the game 1-1 at the 29:02 mark of the first half. Anna Fiorini to tie the game 2-2.
Susquehanna would score the next five goals of the game to open up a 7-2 lead with 16:10 left in the half. Freshman
Morgan Mason put an end to the Crusader tear with her first goal of the season with 15:34 left in the half. The two teams traded goals during the final 15 minutes, highlighted by two goals from Cento, with Susquehanna taking a 10-6 lead into the half.
Drew's
Jess Johnson took advantage of a free-position opportunity just 43 seconds into the second half cutting the Susquehanna lead to three at 10-7. Meredith Crane and Kelcie Ehler put the Crusaders up five with 16:07 left in the game scoring back-to-back goals. Kleiman responded for the Rangers scoring her second and third goals of the game getting the Rangers back within three, 12-9, with 12:36 left in the game.
Susquehanna opened up a seven-goal lead, 16-9, behind a four-goal run spanning just two minutes. With 6:27 left to play Cento found Kleiman for her fourth goal of the game ending the Crusader run. Emma Ehler and Michelle McGinniss combined to score the final four goals of the game for Susquehanna, while Kleiman scored the final two goals for Drew.
Freshman
Jadin James played all 60 minutes for the Rangers in her ninth start of the season. James matched her career-high making 19 saves in the loss.
Susquehanna outshot the Rangers 50-27 and controlled more draws by a 22-12 advantage. The Crusaders were successful on nine out of 10 clear attempts, while Drew an 11-of-23 mark in the clear game. Drew's turnovers outnumbered Susquehanna's 23-14.
With a 10-6 overall record this season, the Rangers qualify to submit a bid to the ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Tournament, an eight-team tournament set to begin on Wednesday, May 7. The ECAC field will be announced on Monday afternoon.
