Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 24, 2014) – The Drew University women's soccer team fell to Stevens Institute of Technology, 2-0, in non-conference action at Ranger Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Ducks (5-3) struck first with a goal in the 16
th minute when a Stevens midfielder chipped a dangerous ball into the Drew box. Raba Nassif scored her seventh goal of the season by collecting the ball with the Rangers'
Sara Nash out of her net, and proceeded to turn and fire a shot into the open net.
The 1-0 lead would hold until halftime, but Drew's team defense prevented it from becoming 2-0 in the 24
th minute. With Nash off her line, junior midfielder
Shannon Slowey denied a Ducks shot by clearing the ball right before it crossed the goal line.
The Rangers (3-4) took their first shot of the game in the 32
nd minute when junior
Mel Santos ran onto a long pass just beyond the 18-yard box, but the Stevens keeper did well to charge the pass and save Santos' attempt at goal.
Drew again relied on help defense early in the second half when another Stevens shot bound for goal was cleared off the far post by freshman defender
Emily Bradford to hold the Drew deficit at 1-0.
"There were some great individual efforts tonight in the face of adversity," said head coach
Christa Racine. "Shannon and Emily showed the kind of team mentality that we are looking for not only in our defensive end, but across the whole field. Those were great heads up plays that helped keep us in the game."
The Ducks broke through for that second goal in the 55
th minute when Ann Heine blasted a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Nash made a diving attempt, but the ball tipped off her hands and ricocheted off the bar and just past the goal line for the 2-0 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Andee Higgins came on for Drew midway through the second half and made five saves to keep the deficit at 2-0.
The Rangers return to action on Satuday, Sept. 27 at 3:30 p.m. for the first Landmark Conference match of the 2014 season at Juniata College. The next home game is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4 at 3:30 p.m. when Susquehanna University comes to Ranger Stadium for Drew's Landmark home opener.
