MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 21, 2016) – The Drew University women's tennis team opened its 2016-17 season with a non-conference loss to Stevens Institute of Technology, 7-2, at home on Wednesday afternoon.
By the Numbers: The Rangers start the season 0-1, while the Ducks improve to 4-1 overall after their first non-conference match of the fall.
Top Performers: Freshman
Ashley Camel launched her collegiate career in style with a straight-set victory over Stevens' No. 1 singles player, Alexis Connor. Camel did not drop a game until midway through the second set, marking her Drew debut with a 6-0, 6-3 win.
Earlier in doubles play, Camel teamed with sophomore
Ty Ty Witten at first doubles. The pair fought back from a 6-3 deficit to bring it to 6-5, but eventually dropped the game to the Ducks' top doubles pair, 8-6.
Other Highlights: Witten provided the second Drew point in her No. 2 singles match against Victoria Piskarev. Following a 6-2 win in the opening set, Witten battled back from being down 5-4 in the second set to win it 7-5.
Senior
Jessica Cheng (third singles) and freshman
Maria Navas Espinal (fifth singles) each won the opening sets of their matches, but ended up falling in three to their Duck opponents.
Up Next: The Rangers continue the fall portion of their schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 27 against Berkeley (N.Y.) College beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Drew Tennis complex.
