HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 10, 2017) – The Drew University women's tennis team won its fifth straight match and wraps up the PTR Spring TennisFest with a 3-0 record following a 9-0 defeat of Defiance College on Friday.
The Rangers move to 5-1 on the year, while Defiance concludes its 2016-17 season at 3-13.
The sweep was started by the Rangers' doubles duos, including an 8-1 win for freshman
Ashley Camel and sophomore
Ty Ty Witten at the top spot. Senior
Jessica Cheng and freshman
Maria Navas Espinal teamed up for an 8-4 victory at No. 2, followed by freshman
Christina Christodoulou and
Cristina Riccio's 8-2 win at third doubles.
Camel and Espinal were two-time winners on Friday with singles victories to go with their doubles success. Camel defeated her No. 1 singles opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, while Navas Espinal took care of second singles, 6-1, 6-0. Camel takes the team lead with seven singles wins in 2016-17, while Navas Espinal improves to 6-2 in her rookie year.

Kathryn Swenor won at third and fourth singles, respectively, in straight sets. Sophomore
Xylia Bruff won at singles for the first time in a dual match this season, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 5 and freshman
Sarah Noel Jeune triumphed in her dual match debut, 6-2, 6-1, in the sixth position.
The Rangers return North with a head of steam and will host John Jay College on Wednesday, March 15 at 4:00 p.m.
