MADISON, N.J. (April 1, 2017) – The Drew University women's tennis team won the final four singles matches to clinch a thrilling, come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Moravian College in a home Landmark Conference dual match on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The victory is Drew's eighth in a row to move its overall record to 8-1 with a 2-0 start in the Landmark. The Greyhounds fall to 4-5 with the loss in their conference opener.
Â
Moravian led the dual match 4-1 after winning 2-of-3 doubles and taking Nos. 1 and 3 singles. With second, fourth, fifth and sixth singles still to go, Drew needed to win them all to claim a victory on Saturday.
Â
With the pressure on, they did just that.
Â
"Everyone did a great job focusing and calming down when the pressure was on," said head coach
Matthew Brisotti. "It can be easy to let the moment get the better of you and lose concentration, but our team stayed the course and continued to play consistent and smart tennis."
Â
Sophomore
Ty Ty Witten started the rally at the second singles spot with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Freshmen
Cristina Riccio and
Maria Navas Espinal then recorded a pair of straight set wins at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, respectively, to tie the match 4-4 with No. 6 still on the court.
Â
That court belonged to senior
Megan Jarvis, who clinched the 5-4 triumph by topping her Moravian opponent, 6-2, 6-1.
Â
Riccio and freshman partner
Christina Christodoulou salvaged a match in doubles play, scoring an 8-3 win at the No. 3 spot. The rookie duo has won seven straight matches sharing the doubles court.
Â
In singles, Jarvis and Witten both won their fifth straight singles matches as Navas Espinal ties for the team lead in singles wins with a 9-3 record this season.
Â
The Rangers get a week off before returning to Landmark Conference action with a pair of dual matches on the road at Catholic and Goucher next weekend, April 8 and 9.
