MADISON, N.J. (May 3, 2017) – The top-seeded Drew University women's tennis team suffered its first conference loss of the season and saw its 14-match winning streak come to an end at the hands of No. 4 The University of Scranton, who won Wednesday's Landmark Conference Championship semifinal match 5-2.
 
The Rangers conclude the 2017 season with an overall record of 14-2, having last lost in the 2016-17 season opener on September 21 against Stevens. Scranton advances to the Landmark championship match on Saturday at No. 2 Elizabethtown College with an overall record of 8-8.
 
The Royals turned the tables on the Rangers after falling 7-2 in the regular season just two weeks ago. In that match, Drew took a 3-0 lead after doubles play. In the Landmark semifinals, it was Scranton that swept doubles play and entered single competition needing two victories to advance in the playoffs.
 
Scranton went up 4-0 with a win in fourth singles, the first completed match in the books. With all six singles matches on the court, the Rangers chipped away with wins at first and second singles. Freshman Ashley Camel beat Scranton's Nastashia DeNunzio 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in a second-set tiebreaker at first singles, followed by sophomore Ty Ty Witten's straight set win (6-0, 6-3) at No. 2 over Emily Machado.
 
The Royals clinched the playoff victory at sixth singles in straight sets, their requisite fifth win of the day. Notably, freshman Maria Navas Espinal was playing for match-point at fifth singles, and senior Jessica Cheng was up a set at third singles when the match ended on Scranton's fifth point.
