MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's tennis team split a pair of matches in its season opener on Sunday at the Drew University Tennis Complex.
The Rangers opened the day with a 9-0 win over Arcadia University, then lost a tough 5-4 decision to Misericordia University.
Senior
Ashley Camel went 4-0 on the day, winning all of her matches at No. 1 singles and doubles, while classmate
Cristina Riccio also posted a 4-0 mark at the No. 2 flights.
Against the Knights, Drew started with doubles victories at the Nos. 1-2 while earning a forfeit at No. 3. Camel and sophomore
Marwa Elessawy won 8-1 at No. 1 while senior
Christina Christodoulou breezed to an 8-0 victory at No. 2.
Capturing singles victories were Camel at No. 1 (6-1, 6-0), Riccio at No. 2 (6-0, 6-0), Elessawy at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0), Christodoulou at No. 4 (6-1, 6-1), sophomore
Kate Gangi at No. 5 (6-0, 6-0), and senior
Sarah Noel Jeune at No. 6 (forfeit).
The Rangers jumped to a 2-1 lead against Misericordia after capturing two of the three doubles matches. Camel and Elessawy won 8-3 at No. 1 while Noel Jeune and Riccio earned an 8-4 victory at No. 2.
Camel (6-0, 6-2) and Riccio (6-3, 6-3) won at first and second singles, and it was a 4-4 match with only No. 4 singles remaining. But Misericordia's Kayla Rembish won a tight 6-4, 6-7 (3-6), 10-7 decision versus Christodoulou to clinch the match for the Cougars.
Drew continues its season on Friday, when it hosts Division II East Stoudsburg University at 3 p.m.
