Women's Tennis Plays Twice in Spring Break Opener

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Drew University women's tennis team opened its spring break trip to Hilton Head on Sunday but came up on the short end of a pair of decisions.

Taking on a pair of undefeated opponents, the Rangers opened the morning with a loss to Gettysburg (5-0) in a match that was closer than the 7-2 score indicated. Later in the day, Drew fell 9-0 to Sweet Briar (3-0).

The Blue and Green forced a tiebreaker in four sets versus Gettysburg, but unfortunately ame up on the short end of all four.

The Bullets won two out of three doubles sets, but sophomore Melina Christodoulou and freshman Mary Kalorin captured an 8-5 victory at No. 1. Sophomore Taylor Dombalis and junior Danielle DelRosso lost in a tiebreaker at No. 3 by a score of 8-7 (7-5).

In singles action, the Rangers captured the first set in each of the top three flights, only to see Gettysburg rally to win each of them. Drew captured its lone singles victory at the No. 6 spot, where DelRosso prevailed 8-7 (10-6).

Against Sweet Briar, Drew's closest match came at No. 2 singles, where Kalorin was edged 6-3, 7-5.

The Rangers (1-4) continue their trip on Tuesday, when they travel to Savannah State in Georgia for a match starting at 4 p.m.
