WASHINGTON – The Drew University men's swimming & diving team won seven events but the Drew University men's swimming & diving team was handed a 165-131 setback at Catholic University in its season opener on Saturday.
Junior
Nicholas Heinio-Widell, the reigning Landmark Conference Swimmer of the Year, picked up right where he left off last season, by winning three individual events: the 200-freestyle (1:46.74), 100-butterfly (52.56), and the 200-IM (2:02.07).
Junior
Brendan Burkett also captured a pair of events, touching first in both the 50-freestyle (22.02) and the 100-freestyle (48.00).
Sophomore
Kyle Talerico added an individual victory for the Rangers, as he captured the 200-butterfly (1:59.96).
Drew also won the 200-freestyle, as Talerico, sophomore
Liam Gregory, freshman
Hunor Harsanyi, and Burkett prevailed by 0.30 seconds in 1:29.68.
Also capturing runner-up honors were junior
Ricky Kilichowski in both the 100-backstroke (57.34) and the 200-backstroke (2:06.26), Gregory in the 1,000-freestyle (10:25.01), junior
Gabe Spivak in the 100-breaststroke (1:01.29), and freshman
Issac Jeffers in the 500-freestyle (5:01.86).
The Rangers pick up their schedule next Saturday, when they visit Montclair State University for a dual meet starting at 1 p.m.
