WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Drew University men's golf team surged to the lead on the opening day of The Melee, held at Ford's Colony Country Club in Virginia.
The Rangers shot an even-par 288 and lead McDaniel College by four strokes in the field of 14 teams. Dickinson College is in third place with a 305.
Individually, junior
Elliot Parker and sophomore
Avery Cohen have led the way for the Rangers and are locked in a three-way with McDaniel's Hogan Schulze for first place. All three opened the tournament with a 1-under 71, with Parker firing five birdies while Cohen parred 13 holes and birdied two others.
Freshman
Brian Cotter was Drew's third finisher on Sunday after opening with a season-low 72, placing him in a three-way tie for fourth place in the field of 70. Senior
Mike Ford rounded out the team scoring with a 74, placing him in a three-way tie for eighth place.
Sophomore
Thomas Hurley was also in action and tied for 23rd with a 78.
The second and final round of the tournament will be held on Monday.
