POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Drew University men's fencing team finished 3-3 while facing some stellar competition at the Vassar College Invitational on Sunday.
The Rangers, ranked No. 6 in the United States Fencing Coaches Association Division preseason poll, defeated Yeshiva (26-1), Denison (23-4), and Hunter (24-3).
Two of Drew's three losses came at the hands of nationally-ranked programs, including a 21-6 setback versus Yale, ranked No. 9 in the overall USFCA preseason poll. The Rangers also lost 25-2 versus Johns Hopkins, ranked No. 2 in Division III, and 17-10 to Haverford.
The Rangers turned in their top performances in foil and sabre, finishing 3-3 in both weapons.
In foil, the Rangers defeated Yeshiva (9-0), Denison (8-1), and Hunter (9-0) while finishing 32-19 individually. Junior
Henri Degremont led the way with a 10-5 performance, including a 3-0 showing versus Hunter and a 2-1 mark against Yale.
Also in foil, senior
Tristan Santulli finished 8-7 on the day while classmate
Aidan DeSola was 7-7. Freshmen
Andrew Klyczek and
Paul Greenleaf went 4-0 and 3-0, respectively, for the Rangers.
The sabre squad downed Yeshiva (8-1), Denison (6-3), and Hunter (6-3). Freshman
Jason Ahlman posted the unit's top individual performance, finishing 8-8, while sophomore
Logan Kleva went 5-4.
In epee, Drew recorded 9-0 wins over both Yeshiva and Hunter. Senior
Danny Stevens went 6-5, highlighted by a 2-1 showing versus Yale. Freshman
JP Emmert and junior
Eddie Matto each finished 4-0, freshman
Nicholas Machado posted a 3-0 mark, and first-year
Jackson Howard was 2-0.
The Rangers continue their season next Sunday, when they travel to Stevens for a MACFA "A versus B" event.
