Sala Places 17th at Regionals for Men’s Fencing

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Sophomore Lupo Sala placed 17th in epee to lead the Drew University in men's fencing team at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Region Championships on Saturday at Haverford College.
 
A total of 12 members of Drew's men's team qualified for the highly-competitive event, which featured some of the top performers in all of college fencing.
 
Sala entered the event as the No. 9 seed, which earned him a first-round bye. In the second round, he finished 3-2, defeating opponents from Duke, Princeton, and Stevens to advance to the third round. Though he was not able to earn a victory in his final round, he battled the eventual fifth-place finisher, Sergei Kudriavtsev of Princeton, to a 5-4 decision.
 
Freshman Ben Koyfman posted Drew's second-best finish on the day, placing 25th in epee. He opened with a stellar showing in the first round, finishing 4-1 with wins over competitors from NJIT, Wagner, Duke, and Haverford. His day came to an end in the second round, where he went 1-4, but he achieved a victory over eventual finalist and eighth-place finisher Jorge Gana of Johns Hopkins.
 
Three additional Rangers competed in epee. Seniors Will Morton tied for 37th after going 2-3 in the first round, topping opponents from Johns Hopkins and Duke, while classmate Eddie Matto also posted a 2-3 first-round mark, beating fencers from Haverford and Stevens en route to a 39th-place finish. In addition, sophomore Jackson Howard went 1-4 and placed 43rd.
 
In foil, senior Henri Degremont closed out his career with a 33rd-place finish. He started the day with a 3-3 performance in the first round, topping fencers from Stevens, Lafayette, and Penn, before going 0-5 in the second round. Also competing in foil were sophomores Paul Greenleaf (40th), Jason Sobon (41st), and Andrew Klyczek (42nd), each of whom finished 1-5.
 
In sabre, sophomore Nicolas Machado (T-33rd, 1-4), sophomore Jason Ahlman (36th, 1-5), and junior Logan Kleva (39th, 0-6) were all in action.
