CLARK, N.J. – The Drew University men's cross country team placed second among five teams at the Ranger XC Invitational on Friday at Oak Ridge Park.
The Rangers finished behind only Scranton while placing in front of FDU-Florham, Lycoming, and Goucher.
The meet served as a preview of sorts for the Landmark Conference Championships, which will be held at the same location on Nov. 1.
On a hot and humid day with temperatures soaring well into the 80s, junior
Tommy Edwards paced the Rangers, placing sixth in the field of 36. Competing in his first race of the season, he was timed at 17 minutes, 23 seconds for the 5,000-meter course.
Edwards was shadowed by freshman
Fred Grote, who took sixth in 17:28. Sophomore
Matt Ellis came in 13th in 17:50 and was followed by senior
Dylan Crain. Freshman
Matt Vargas rounded out the team scoring, placing 15th in 18:19.
Also competing were first-year
Chris Tocci, who was 16th in 18:25, sophomore
Eliot Vishnevsky, who placed 21st in 19:02, and freshman
Patrick Robinson, who was 31st in 21:09.
Scranton's Brayden Clarke won the race in 16:16.
The Rangers continue their season Sept. 20, when they compete at the Delaware Valley Invitational.
