The Drew University men's fencing team will take to the strip with a deep and talented roster under fifth-year Head Coach
Joseph Zanko III.
The Rangers bring back 13 athletes from last year's squad that finished sixth at the MACFA Championships. Among that number are 12 fencers who qualified for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Region Championships, including a pair of epee standouts in junior
Lupo Sala and sophomore
Ben Koyfman.
Sala is coming off an outstanding season in which he was honored as a USFCA Second Team Division III All-American. He compiled an individual record of 60-15 while placing eighth at the MACFA Championships and 17th at the NCAA Regional meet.
Koyfman also received postseason recognition following an impressive rookie season a year ago. He joined Sala on the USFCA Mid-Atlantic/South All-Region Division III Team after going 31-13 and earning a 25th-place finish at the NCAA regional championship.
Juniors
Jackson Howard will also return to help bolster the epee squad after finishing 35-33 in regular-season matches and qualifying for NCAA regionals a year ago. Junior
Bryan Cipriano-Goines will also compete in epee this year after participating in sabre over the last two years. Providing additional depth will sophomore
Nick Kmosko and freshmen
Reilley Andre,
Brendan Mendez, and
Aubrey Mitsch.
Drew will feature the most depth in sabre, with nine Rangers dotting the roster. Junior
Jason Ahlman is back after going 45-48 last season while sophomore
Nalby Varoqua (34-26), junior
Nicolas Machado (25-43), and junior
Jack Henderson (18-30) also return. Five freshmen -
Robert Copp-Salko,
Juan Jaramillo,
Manny Lialios,
Anthony Marcum, and
Quincy Martin - will also vie for time on the strip.
The foil squad brings back a number experienced performers this season, including juniors
Andrew Klyczek (38-31),
Paul Greenleaf (34-36), and
Jason Sobon (33-29) and sophomore
Nico Angelos (19-29). Sophomore
Nathaniel Ferrone also returns while freshman
Zach Gelino will push for time as well.
The Rangers open their season at Temple University's Coach Nikki Franke Classic on Sunday. Drew will compete in its first home event on Nov. 7-8 with the Drew Invitational, and the Simon Forum will also be the site for a pair of new events this season – the Division III Fencing Championships (Feb. 14) and the East Coast Fencing Championships (Feb. 28). The NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Championships will be held on March 6 at the University of North Carolina.
