The Drew University women's tennis team will turn to an experienced nucleus of players along with a promising cast of newcomers to lead the way this spring under second-year Head Coach
Geoffrey Diehl C'20.
Last season, the Rangers registered a 10-10 record while posting a 6-3 mark versus Landmark Conference opponents. The team finished in fifth place in the Landmark Conference standings, earning a spot in the conference tournament.
This year, Drew brings back five players from last year's squad, including senior
Natalia Zamora, who went 7-5 while competing primarily at No. 3 singles last season. An All-Landmark Conference Honorable Mention singles selection two years ago, she also finished 6-3 while playing at No. 2 doubles last season.
Juniors
Riley Roesel and
Danielle Pettoni also return after starting the past two years. Roesel posted an 11-9 singles record last season while competing mostly at Nos. 3-4 singles, and she was 8-1 in Landmark Conference play. She also went 11-7 at No. 2 doubles. Pettoni finished 13-6 competing at Nos. 4-5 singles last season and was a perfect 8-0 in Landmark Conference action. In addition, she posted a 4-6 doubles record, including a 4-3 conference mark, while competing at the No. 3 spot.
Junior
Kapriana Payami also returns after competing in eight singles matches and finishing 3-4 in doubles, primarily at the No. 3 position. Sophomore
Madison Williams is also back after missing nearly the entire season with an injury last season.
The Rangers will also feature six newcomers this season, including sophomore transfer
Nicole Kalorin, who posted a 12-7 singles record, mostly at the Nos. 4-5 spots, at Landmark Conference rival Moravian University last season. She was also 12-9 at No. 3 doubles and earned All-Landmark Conference Honorable Mention status in doubles.
Providing additional depth for Drew will be juniors
Daylin Evans and
Destiny Medina, sophomore
Anna Kupyna, and freshmen
Sindi Gjonbocari and
Natalia Melendez Sanchez.
Drew opens the spring portion of its schedule on Friday, when it hosts Ithaca College at 3 p.m. The squad opens Landmark Conference play on March 21, when it visits Lycoming College.
