The men's team won the Brooklyn Invitational, but not without a hint of disappointment as the Ranger Cross Country teams turned in their best performances of 2009 at the Brooklyn Invitational. Running on the famed Van Cortlandt Park course in the Bronx, Drew's Steven Monteleone and Zack Mower were leading the race before being pointed in the wrong direction at 3.5 mile mark. Miraculously, the pair was able to back track and take second and fifth, respectively, and lead the men to a resounding team win. The women's team placed second just three points behind the host Brooklyn Bridges.
The Rangers picked up the team win with 41 points total, easily besting the second place John Jay Bloodhounds by 25 places. The results would have been even better had Monteleone and Mower been pointed in the correct direction. Still, Monteleone placed second overall, just eight seconds behind the winner Patrick O'Leary-Gullo of Brooklyn at 31:16. Mower rebounded to take fifth place, his second straight Top Ten finish at 31:26. The key to the team win was the third through fifth runner performances. Maxwell Rich, Andrew Ehlert and Tim Barnum all placed in the Top 15 guaranteeing the title. Rich placed 10th at 32:52 with Ehlert one place and five seconds behind. Barnum crossed in 13th place at 33:17.
The women's team nearly matched the men, but came up just four places short. The host Bridges' first five runners combined at 61 with the Rangers at 64, but Drew's top four outpaced Brooklyn's by three spots. Senior Ashley Walker was back in the lead for Drew, taking fifth place at 27:40 over the 6K course. Katherine Cross and Sarah Morris placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Carley Thompson rounded out the four Rangers in the Top 15 by crossing at 30:22 in 14th place. The Rangers' fifth and sixth runners, Angela Vittellaro and Erica Cannedy, came in 30th and 31st.
The men's win is the team's first overall is the program's first in more than four years. It also continues the upward trend of results for both sides of the team. The Rangers reward for the crown is a week off before running in the Nevins Invitational at East Stroudsburg on the 24th.
