Men's Soccer Breaks Out With Six

Drew 6, York 0

After a long draught, Drew men's soccer produced a deluge of goals in a 6-0 win over York (N.Y.) . It took just four minutes for Drew to grab an advantage and just five more to add a second. Freshmen Sam Nepveux and Phillip Mabeka each scored their first collegiate goals while veterans Vincent Costa, Jesse Puzio and Marc Chiarello also found the back of the net. For the Cardinals, Brian Broadbelt made 21 saves in goal.

It's been a long, long time coming, but the Rangers finally christened the new scoreboard in the 4th minute of play. Marc Chiarello headed in Tony Pisani's corner for Drew's first goal in 534 minutes of play. Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia could run a marathon FOUR TIMES in 534 minutes or watch the first three and a half Harry Potter movies. One could fly to Barcelona from Newark and get through customs. The average reader could read Profressor Jonathan Rose's Longman-History Today Historical Book of the Year Prize-winning “The Intellectual Life of the British Working Classes” or watch 23 episodes of “Sponge-Bob Square Pants”. Thankfully, we can now say Drew men's soccer can score in the 2009 season in 534 minutes.

Just five minutes later, the Rangers scored their second of the game. Joe Mitchell played a great ball out of the back towards Sam Nepveux. The freshman forward took it down well off his chest before crunching a lefty finish straight over the head of the Cardinal keeper.

Vincent Costa made it three with eight minutes gone in the second half. Costa latched onto a loose ball in the box before crushing a volley front post for his first of the season.

Jesse Puzio broke out of his slump with a goal in the 55th minute. On his second chance, the junior pounded in from close range off the bar for a 4-0 lead. The fifth came from Phillip Mabeka. Set up by Jonah Silk, the freshman finished coolly for his first collegiate tally. Jonah Silk got a goal of his own with under a minute left in the game, firing in from a tight angle.

With the weight of the world off their backs, the Rangers will look ahead to Sunday's match at Vassar to continue their hot streak. On the defensive side, the shutout was Drew's fifth of the season as they now own a 0.15 team goals against average.
