Field Hockey Takes Fall Fest Title

Drew 3, West. Conn. 1

Drew Field Hockey completed its sweep of opening week games with a 3-1 win over Western Connecticut on Sunday afternoon. Elizabeth Law continued her good start to the season with a goal and an assist. Drew's Sarah Charles got her first collegiate goal and Kati Eggert added one as well. Melissa Berardi tallied for the Colonials. The Rangers now boast a 3-0 record.

Nicole DiBattista nearly scored an outstanding opener in the 15th minute. After a great run through the Colonial defense, the Ranger midfielder blasted a shot of the post that ricocheted back out past the circle. Meghan Howlett, who had a goal yesterday in the Rangers' 5-1 win, tested the Western Connecticut keeper with seven minutes left from just inside the circle, but Heather Stone was up to the task. First-year Sarah Charles got the Rangers on the board with five minutes left in the half. She opened her collegiate account by knocking in off Elizabeth Law's assist.

Kati Eggert doubled the Ranger lead five minutes into the second half via a penalty stroke. The play started with a corner that Elizabeth Law fired off a post. Eggert's shot was saved by Stone, but the rebound fell to Mary Esposito in front of goal. Her first attempt was saved by a Colonial defender before the Ranger sophomore won the penalty stroke with her second attempt. Eggert finished high to the right of the keeper.

Law then nearly made it 3-0 a little bit later as she again hit the post, again off a corner. The reigning Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Year finally did get her goal with nine minutes left in the game as she tipped in Christine Beckhusen's shot.

The goal proved valuable as the Colonials got on the board just a minute later when Melissa Berardi powered home a penalty shot to make it 3-1. The Rangers held off any further Colonial efforts to run the clock out on the game and capture the Drew Fall Festival Championship with a 2-0 record. Drew's Hannah Rau was tabbed as the Tournament's Defensive MVP while Law won the Offensive MVP after contributing to nearly every goal.

Drew is now 3-0 on the season while a big non-conference matchup against William Paterson awaiting them on Wednesday.
